Hutchinson Builders has completed 21 Shell retail service stations around Australia and currently has 1 under construction. These projects have been executed under a variety of contractual arrangements on both greenfield and brownfield sites with an array of ground conditions.
One of our most successful and complex projects for Shell was completed at Southport in Queensland. The multi-function service station incorporates a Coles Express as well as Hungry Jack’s and Shell fuel retailer. Hutchinson Builders undertook the contract works for Coles and Shell and coordinated the internal fitout of these outlets while performing the complete Hungry Jack’s fitout. With numerous stakeholders involved in building various components of the different outlets, Hutchies worked with a diverse range of consultants, project managers and retailers, ensuring the timing of construction works, procurement and fitouts were all aligned and coordinated.
The project presented a number of challenges, with the ground conditions consisting of uncontrolled fill, making it necessary to redesign the footings once site work commenced. Hutchinson Builders worked alongside the consultants to collaborate on a solution for the fittings, resulting in the use of screw piles rather than the conventional bored piers in the original design, as well as a suspended slab design. The latent conditions of the site resulted in delays as issues were worked through and resolved by all parties. Ultimately, Hutchies was able to mitigate the delays so the programme was not unnecessarily compromised.
