Hutchinson Builders is proud to have delivered Green Square Public School & Community Spaces, a visionary education and community facility designed for one of Australia’s fastest-growing and most densely populated urban areas.

Delivered in partnership with School Infrastructure NSW and the City of Sydney, this four-storey facility accommodates up to 600 students and provides vital shared spaces for the local community. Designed by BVN through a Design Excellence Competition in 2019, the building makes the most of its unique L-shaped site and integrates seamlessly into the revitalised Green Square precinct.

Settled on the former Royal South Sydney Hospital site, the project anchors itself in local history while enriching the Green Square urban renewal precinct with a vibrant, multipurpose hub. Delivered through extensive collaboration between stakeholders, Green Square Public School & Community Spaces blends education, culture and community in a way that redefines how high-density neighbourhoods connect and grow.

The ground floor of the school includes four multipurpose halls available for hire, a versatile games court, and a striking Indigenous mural titled ‘The Belly of the Feast’ by Archibald Prize-winning artist Blak Douglas, curated by Caroline Comino.

By day, the facility operates as a contemporary school, with 24 modern classrooms, a library, canteen, staff amenities, and a covered outdoor learning area (COLA). Play spaces are thoughtfully woven into landscaped courtyards across the first three levels, with a rooftop playground and outdoor seating on level four.

By night and on weekends, the ground floor transforms into a vibrant community hub. Locals can access the space until 10:00pm for events, recreation, cultural activities and gatherings.

Material selection was key to achieving design excellence. High-quality materials were sourced globally, including from the UK, Switzerland and Spain. The Flexbrick façade spans 2,200m² and was a standout feature in BVN’s winning design excellence competition submission. 

The entire concrete structure comprises over 4,000m² of pigmented Class 2 concrete, poured in-situ, requiring a coordinated approach and expert execution. The result is a façade that blends with the surrounding built environment and interfaces seamlessly.

Green Square Public School & Community Spaces sets a new benchmark for integrating education with community infrastructure. Hutchinson Builders is honoured to have played a role in shaping a space that celebrates learning, connection and civic life, and reimagines how high-density communities come together.
