Hutchies was thrilled to be engaged to undertake the redevelopment of Wests Bulldogs Rugby Union Club’s beloved home located at heritage-listed Toowong Memorial Park in Sylvan Road, Brisbane. The works incorporated demolition of the existing building on the site, the complete reorientation of the playing field and construction of a beautiful new clubhouse with community facilities and a range of commercial tenancies.
The iconic red-brick arches which are a dramatic design feature of the building, used 160,000 individual bricks and were created in just three months. As part of the process of reorienting the field, a massive 14,000m3 soil was removed from the site. The project program was compressed by four months due to delays in approvals processes, requiring us to complete the works within five months to meet the start of 2017's game season. This was achieved by scheduling double shifts and working around the clock with around 200 people on site to ensure the project was delivered within the client’s required time frame.
The new development includes Pitch & Fork cafe, the Club's Bistro and Bar, as well as a medical imaging centre. This required the installation of copper shielding to ensure isolation of the electromagnetic radiation equipment, and a special roof hatch through which to safely and securely land the $8M state-of-the-art MRI machine.
